Description of Egypt

1995 Benedikt Taschen
Text: Gilles Néret, Paris
ISBN 3-8228-8851-6

In Ancient Egypt, the sculptors were considered the "conservers of life". Their funtion was to perpetuate the memory of the Pharaohs by inscribing their faces in granite. When, in 1798, Napoleon launched his Egyptian expedition, he dreamt of emulating the glory of Alexander and Ceaser. 500 scholars, experts and artists accompanied his 35.000 troops, and on their return, they must have felt very close to the artisans of Ancient Egypt. For although the "Egyptian Campaign" was a fiasco, it had immense consequences for the field of archeology. The remains of pharaonic Egypt which were discovered under the millennial sands had been meticulously catalogued and drawn by the team of scholars, and Napoleon, by now Emperor, ordered the publication of these records. The monumental work that resulted, the Description de l'Egypte (Description of Egypt), constitutes a veritable ethnographic and economic compendium. The 30 plates reproduced here have been selected from ten folio volumes and two anthologies, with a total of 3.000 illustrations. This huge undertaking lasted  20 years and gave birth to a new science: Egyptology. It enabled Champollion to decipher the hieroglyphics of Ancient Egypt, influenced the decision to built the Suez Canal, inspired Howard Carter to seek the tomb of Tutankhamen and aroused interest world-wide.
